History: The fascinating story and history of Indian Academy of Allergy (IAA) will have to be traced to the Annual Conference of the Indian College of Allergy and Applied Immunology (ICAI) held at Bangalore in 1987. It was a herculean task for Dr Shripad N Agashe, Dr Pendakur Anand and Dr K Kanak Rao who were forced to take the burden of the work but it provided them a great opportunity to learn many issues concerning clinical allergy in India. Since ICAI was a sort of a conglomerate Organization of Clinicians, Basic Immunologists, Virologists, Botanists, Aerobiologists, Entomologists and Biochemists, many felt that there was a need for an Organization with focus and attention to Clinical Allergy, Asthma, Aerobiology and Applied Immunology. It is to his credit that Dr Agashe was the prime mover for initiating a serious dialogue that motivated other colleagues to establish IAA. After debating and deliberating several times, IAA came into existence in 1989 with the First Executive Council consisting of Dr Agashe as the President, Dr Anand as the Vice President, Dr Nagendra Prasad as the Secretary, Dr M S Prakash as the Joint Secretary, Dr K Kanak Rao as the Treasurer and, Dr H B Chandrashekar and Dr A S Ramamanohar as the Members.
First major Scientific Event of IAA is the Seven Days National level Clinical Workshop conducted in 1991 wherein 25 medical graduates across the country, were provided basic training in Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. Conveners of this pioneering Event were Dr Anand and Dr Kanak Rao.
First national conference was held in Bangalore in 1992. Following that, biannual national conferences have been held in Mysore, Goa, Bangalore, Pune, Visakhapatnam and Kochi. Dr Agashe, Dr Omprakash, Dr H Paramesh, Dr Anand, Dr Kanak Rao and Dr Vidyasagar have been the past Presidents.
Apart from the Conferences, the Academy has conducted many Seminars and Symposia
